Are the email reports working - how do I configure them?

Yes!

We have basic email reports for the free service, and we have some pretty in-depth daily, weekly and monthly email reports for the upgraded service.

Unfortunately we can only offer basic email reports to the free service, because if the free members don't log in to view the ads beside their stats, the service would not be profitable.

How do you make sure that 'you' are NOT counted by Statcounter?

If you have a "static" IP, you can block your entries like this:

1. Click "wrench" icon next to your project
2. Click "Edit Settings"
3. Scroll down until you see "IP Blocking" (at the bottom of the list)
4. Copy the IP address shown in that box and paste in the box to the right.

If your IP changes each time you login to your ISP, you can block your entries by creating a blocking cookie, but you first must make sure that you are able to accept both first and third-party cookies from www.statcounter.com. Once your certain that statcounter cookies are set, login to your account and browse to the "My Projects" page.

1. Click the "Create Blocking Cookie" link above your projects.

How do I change my counter starting count?

Login to your account > installation & configuration > configure counter

and change the page load and unique visitor count to whatever you like. (this is referred to as your 'lifetime count' elsewhere in your stats as well).

What happens when my log size reaches 500 - does it stop tracking?

Absolutely not! For the free service we can only sustain offering a log size of 500 to our members, and we perform the detailed analysis on this. Bigger log files put a greater strain on the servers and cannot be provided free of charge. We would like to, but it just isn't sustainable.

When your log size if full it simply overwrites the oldest entry in the database. You get to use that log size to its maximum!

How do I install my counter onto my website?

If you have already created an account and added a project to it. Then follow the following steps.

1. Login to your account.

2. Click 'Installation & Configuration'

3. Click on 'Install Code'.

4. Using the mouse highlight/select ALL the code. (if your website is using frames click the frames option, and hit the submit button to generate frames code first)

5. Right-click with the mouse and click copy. (if your a mac user, go to edit and click copy)

6. Open up a program called 'notepad' or another simple text editor. Do not use FrontPage or any HTML software for this as these programs could corrupt the code.

7. Using notepad open up your homepage file, it may be called index.html or something similar. (If you don't know how to do this because someone else designed or hosted your website for you then we suggest you get in contact with them to add the statcounter code.)

8. Right click with the mouse anywhere after you see the <body> and before the </body> tag. Then left click on 'paste'.

9. Save the changes to your updated homepage file now and upload to your server! Now we'll track your visitors for you.

Why is this service free?

This service is completely financed through the revenue brought by advertising on the StatCounter website only. We can't stress this enough. We only show advertisements on OUR website. Your website is completely free of ads, and you can even choose to use an invisible tracker for free too! But please remember to support our generous advertisers by buying and using their products.

My counter increases by one when I reload the page, how can I make it to only track unique visitors?

1. Login to your account

2. Go to 'My Projects'

3. Click 'installation & configuration' (the icon)

4. Click the 'configure counter' link

5. In the display option - select "show unique visitors" from the drop down list.

6. Hit the submit button

This will work however if you have cookies disabled in your browser the counter will be unable to determine if you are a unique visitor or not and the counter will increase each time regardless of this setting.

How do I close my account?

In order to close your account please fill out the following form:

http://www.statcounter.com/close_account.php

We're very sorry to see you go!

If there is anything we can do to keep you as a customer please do let us know!

I don't want to have to login to view my stats. Can I make my stats public?

1. Go to 'My Projects'

2. Click 'project access' (the lock icon)

3. Tick the box for public stats and the link to be used is given.

Why should I bother logging out?

Logging out destroys your currently actively session on the site, and it all destroys all StatCounter session cookies that were present in your browser. If you did not log out, and you were to visit another site it could be possible for them to get you to click a link, that would send your cookie information to another individual without you knowing about it. That individual would then be able to use that cookie information to gain access to your account without even knowing your password!

I've been using StatCounter for a while now but just last week it seems to have stopped working. It's not tracking any more visitors. What's wrong?

Please visit your own website, and then view the source code of your website. I'd almost bet you that the StatCounter code has either accidentally been deleted or corrupted.

Remove all traces of the old StatCounter code and insert a fresh clean copy from your StatCounter account.

You may also have other javascript that comments out our code by accident. If it still doesn't work, then create a very basic test page to see if it works on that page. Or you can also try moving the StatCounter code nearer to the top of the page.

I just started using StatCounter but it's not working. Your system is broken. I know I'm having visitors but they are not being tracked by your system. What's wrong?

The StatCounter code has not been added to your website! If you don't add the code we can't track it! It's a pretty smart system, but it isn't that smart.
If you have microsoft internet explorer, do the following.

1. Go to your website
2. Click the view menu, and then click source.
3. Notepad will load up and show you the source code (HTML) for your website. Is the StatCounter code anywhere on that page?

You have to put the StatCounter code into the source of your website. Once you do that, we can track it for you and it will work.

Do you reserve the right to share my email addresses or my clients' site users' email addresses with third parties?

We 100% absolutely do not. Your personal and private data is kept private. We will not share it with any third parties. And we have no way of getting your website users' email addresses, but if we did we still wouldn't share it with any third parties. We keep the overheads of this site to a minimum and manage to operate it free of charge because of our generous advertisers on the StatCounter website only - not yours.

Can I alter the StatCounter code?

No. You may not alter the code.

I have my counter configured for unique visitors, but it still reloads every time I reload the page? How do I fix this?

Your browser must be blocking the cookie. The uniqueness is based on a cookie. If you browser doesn't allow the cookie to be created it will increase each time, because it can't tell you visited the website before.

How do I block my IP address so it does not get recorded?

1. Click the "My Projects" link in the top left corner

2. Click the small wrench icon to the right of the project you want the blocking for

3. Click the "Edit Settings" link

4. Enter your IP address in the section at the bottom titled "IP Blocking".

5. Check the box for "Update IP Blocking in All Projects" if you want this IP blocking to apply to all of your projects

6. Click the "Edit Project" button at the bottom

The code is installed fine but it's not counting any visitors for some reason.

If the code is installed fine, then are you sure you are getting visitors? Did you configure StatCounter counter to block your visits with a cookie, or to block them based on your IP address?

Try to get a friend to visit your website, and see if they get recorded.

If that doesn't work then you may also have other javascript that comments out our code by accident. Or perhaps some badly formed HTML. If it still doesn't work, then create a very basic test page to see if it works on that page. Or you can also try moving the StatCounter code nearer to the top of the page.

What does "no referring link" mean?

No referring link means they typed your address in directly into the address bar. Or they had your website bookmarked.

Can I install the counter on more than one page?

Yes. Absolutely. It is highly recommended that you install the same counter code onto all your pages. This allows you to track your user behaviour - how they navigate around your site and not all your visitors find your site from the homepage.

Can I make my hit counter visible on my homepage and invisible on the rest of the pages?

Yes. Firstly configure exactly how you want your counter to look on your homepage.

1. Login to your account
2. Go to 'my projects'
3. Click the 'installation and configuration' icon
4. Click the "configure counter" link
5. Configure your counter to blend in perfectly with your homepage

Now you need to install the code onto your homepage.

6. From the side menu then click the "install code" link
7. Insert the default code into the homepage of your website

Now you need to install the code onto the rest of your pages.

8. Then tick the "invisible counter" box and click the "generate code" button.
9. Take this code and insert it into the rest of the pages of your website.

You now have a perfectly configured counter for your homepage, and an invisible counter for the rest of your pages.

How do I upgrade?

Upgrading couldn't be easier. Simply log into your account and click the "upgrade" link.

I upgraded my account but my log size has not been increased - how long does it take?

The upgrade is instant! We give our members the power to do whatever they want with their increased log quota. It is not automatically assigned to your projects. You need to log into your account, click on the installation & configuration icon of one of your projects. Then click the 'adjust log' link. Then set the log size of your project to your desired amount.

I've adjusted the log size of my project but it isn't making use of the increased capacity. Why?

The log sizes are based on an efficient circular storage system that maximises the use of space. The old cycle of your log will finish before it begins to use your new log size.

The country, city, state, regions stats are a little off. I know my friend is from xxx but he is coming up as xxx.

It is impossible to be 100% accurate all the time for the geo-location but it is very, very accurate 95% of the time. We update our database monthly to ensure the highest degree of accuracy possible.

One of the biggest problems is with AOL who use a web proxy for all the users so it is very, very difficult to accurately determine the location of AOL users.

I have the code installed fine but the counter is not showing up. Why?

It is very likely that there is other javascript that comments out our code by accident. Or perhaps some badly formed HTML. Create a very basic test page to see if it works on that page. Or you can also try moving the StatCounter code nearer to the top of the page.

To fix the error on your page make sure that all opened tags are also closed.

Can I install this in our company's intranet?

Yes. It will work great with your company's intranet once you have access to the internet while using your intranet.

The unique visitor/returing visitor counts are a little off.

The unique visitors and returning visitors is based entirely on cookies. If a person's browser has cookies disabled they will always be counted as a unique visitor. If they delete their cookie and visit your site again they will be counted as a unique visitor and not a returning visitor.

It can never be an exact science with determining the exact number of unique visitors but it does give a very good idea, and you can easily spot trends over time from this information.

All of my visitors are coming up with a "no referring link" - is there a problem?

You more than likely do not have the code installed correctly, or it has been corrupted over time, or you chose the basic HTML counter option when installing your code.

You need to delete the current code from your webpage and insert a fresh new clean unaltered copy back into your website to start getting the referrals logged again.

I want the counter to appear somewhere else on the page - how do I do that?

You simply need to place the code anywhere between the tags of your website. You can place the code anywhere between inside tables or whatever you like. You can move the code around to have it display where you want it to.

Why do I not get keyword stats even though I know I am getting referrals from search engines?

We are still developing the keyword stats to its full potential, we work with most search engines at the moment. But there are some search engines which we don't include the keyword analysis at the moment.

Cross checking the visitor/summary stats the unique visitors don't add up.

We provide the StatCounter service to give you the best stats possible, the summary stats are based on a cookie to determine unique visitors. So it is very good for spotting trends over time.

The visitor stats - shows you in precise detail everything about the visitors to your website, so you can determine yourself exactly who has been to your website.

How do I make my counter invisible?

1. Login to your account
2. Click the installation and configuration icon beside your project.
3. Click the configure counter link
4. Choose the invisble option
5. Hit submit

How do I block my visits from being tracked using a cookie?

1. Login to your account
2. Click the 'wrench icon' next to your project
3. Click the "create blocking cookie" link
4. Click the button to create a blocking cookie.

Note: When you log out of your account this blocking cookie is also destroyed, so don't log out of your account if you want to keep on blocking your visits. Also if you are using multiple browsers, you need to create blocking cookies for each of your browser.

Note: Sometimes this doesn't work depending on your browser, one tip that does seem to work for some members who are having trouble is to click the button a couple of times. It seems to clear up something on their computer.

What is a URL?

Uniform Resource Locator - The address of a site on the Internet (a.k.a. The World Wide Web). It is in the form: protocol://hostname.domain.name/directory or file_names/file_name.file extension For example http://www.statcounter.com is a URL.

Can I reset my logs back to zero?

You CAN reset your logs back to ZERO by going to My Projects > Install Code and Customise Project Settings - however we do not recommend this.

This is because you can NOT get the stats back once you reset your logs.

Also, there is no reason to reset your logs - older hits in your log are simply overwritten by new hits. Your StatCounter does NOT stop tracking when your log is full!

Is it possible to exports the stats as a CSV or Excel file?

We currently allow you to export your summary stats as an excel or csv file.

We are working hard to make the rest of the stats exportable as well asap.

What timezone are these stats recorded in?

You can have your stats recorded in whatever timezone you like! To change the timezone your stats are being recorded in simply follow these steps.

1. Login to your account
2. Click the installation and configuration icon beside your project name
3. Click the 'edit settings' link
4. Chooze your timezone from the drop down list.

Note: We only list the timezones that are relevant for the country you have listed in your profile. If you want to use a timezone from another country you will have to update your profile to use that country.

Why are the stats different to my server log analysis?

StatCounter.Com can produce far different results to standard log file analysis. This is not surprising as our system is designed to track browsers NOT server requests. This can result in a significantly lower count than standard log file analysis. But it offers a more realistic figure of the visitors to your website and far more detail and it is provided in real-time!

So how do they differ?

A big factor is the placement of the StatCounter tracking code. You can use StatCounter to only track the pages you want by simply placing it on the pages you want to track. Log file analysis will track all server requests by default.

If you have very large, slow loading pages it is recommended to place the tracking code closer to the top of the page instead of the bottom. Or a visitor may exit your page before the page finishes loading and the tracking script will never have been loaded.

Framed websites can cause a big problem for log file analysis resulting in an over-inflated count. When a visitor visits a singe page that could often be recorded as 3 visits - loading the main frame, a side frame and a footer. StatCounter does not have this problem.

Cached pages are another huge problem for log file analysis this time resulting in a very poor undercount of visitors. Often your own local ISP will keep a cache of many websites you visit regularly. This speeds up your use of the web - unfortunately no server request is made to your website when this happens. And your visit will go uncounted. This does not happen with StatCounter with the use of javascript and a random variable each time.

Web Proxies - many users, most noticeably AOL users access the web through a web proxy. Their ip address can change on each request to your website so log file analysis could not accurately count your unique visitors. StatCounter does both - we use a simple cookie and the user's ip address.

Robots - the requests made to your website by robots will be recorded in your log files but it will not be recorded by StatCounter.

Overall StatCounter provides a far more detailed, accurate count and tracking of behavior of the 'real' visitors to your website than standard log file analysis.

I want to upgrade for a full year - not a monthly subscription.

We now offer this ability! When choosing your upgrade you can pay monthly, quarterly or yearly!

The lifetime count from "my projects" page is different from the total being displayed on my counter - why is it different?

It is very likely you have you counter configured to show unique visitors, while the lifetime count displays the total pageloads.

How do I delete a user?

1. Simply login to your account

2. Click the "Users" link from the top navigation bar.

3. Click the 'trash can' icon next to the user you would like to delete.

4. Confirm.

Your user has now been deleted.

How do I view these real-time stats and visitors?

1. Simply login to your account

2. Click the real time stats icon (bar chart icon) beside your project name.

3. Click the visitors or path link from the left menu.

The counter is installed correctly but it is not increasing!

Have you blocked your own visits from being counted?

During the sign up process you can block your ip address from being tracked, as well as creating a blocking cookie on your browser to stop your visits from being logged.

Be sure to get a friend using a different ip address and computer to visit your website first!

If a visitor does not have cookies enabled are they still tracked by the system?

Yes! Absolutely the visitors are still tracked. They will be considered a unique visitor to your website on each page load but they will still be tracked.

Can i pay with a business check (cheque) for a full year?

Yes! Simply login to your account.

Click "Upgrade" in the top navigation.

In the left menu select "Payment Method" and choose "Check/Money Order".

We also accept wire/bank transfers.

Then simply select "Choose Upgrade" in the left menu and follow the rest of the steps.

Is there a user type that can ONLY view the summary stats?

We are working on adding a user type that allows this. It is currently not an option.

What is a landing page in the keyword stats?

This is very useful in the keyword stats. With the StatCounter code you can insert it on every page of your website. Of course you don't just get visitors coming into your website from just the homepage. They can find your website from any page.

The landing page column in the keyword stats shows this nicely - it will show the keyword they typed in the search engine as well as the page they 'landed on' when they visited your website first.

There are pages recorded in my stats that do not exist on my website - pages from other websites and pages from people's hard disks like file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Jim/My%20Documents/ Gallery.htm - why?

This is a very interesting statistics! This means someone has found your website extremely useful - and they have downloaded one of your webpages with the StatCounter code as well - the clever StatCounter code however tracks this when it is loaded on their computer then and you can find out a little information about the people downloading your web pages.

Why xhtml valid code is not validating as w3c valid code - why?

It can't! If you want w3c valid code then tick the w3c valid code box in the code generation page. If you want xhtml valid code then tick the valid xhtml valid code.

You can't have w3c valid and xhtml valid. Personally I don't see the need for xhtml valid code on a website so I'd recommend to go with w3c.

Whenever I try to access the statcounter.com page now, my spybot program keeps blocking a file called "Avenue A" from downloading. Then, after I close that pop-up alert, I get nothing. Can anyone help?

The offical word from Tribal Fusion - who display the banner ads on our site is:

Avenue A's product, Atlas DMT, is a third party ad server that many advertisers use to serve their advertisements. Users who have cookies disabled, or have aggressive anti-virus software, may receive a notification of a cookie from Avenue A being downloaded. This cookie is used simply to track the performance of ads being served by Atlas DMT. For more information, you can visit the privacy policy page of Atlas DMT:

http://www.atlasdmt.com/privacy/

Please let me know if you have any additional questions. This is not malicious software.

If you upgrade your account there is an option to disable banner ads as well.

The StatCounter.com homepage won't load - and my counter won't load on my webpage.

It is possible that you have installed some anti-virus software that has added the following line to your hosts file on your computer.

------------------------------------------------------
www.statcounter.com 127.0.0.1
------------------------------------------------------

Your hosts file can be found in the following locations.

Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts

Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open it up with program like notepad and remove the line.

How do I configure default summary stat settings for guest users?

The summary stats now offer a lot of options, and users can save a default configuration that will be used everytime they log in. However, for all guest users, these default settings are the same, and they cannot save their own configuration.

This can be overcome by users to a degree, however, by adding a Stats Viewer user to their account - they can set up a default stats summary configuration for that user as they see fit, and then make the username and password for that Stats Viewer user public - so guest users can login as a Stats Viewer. The login can be embedded in links aswell as follows:

http://my.statcounter.com/project/?form_user=USERNAME&form_pass=PASSWORD

where USERNAME and PASSWORD are substituted with the public Stats Viewer username and password.

Why is data showing up for "Week 53" in my stats? Aren't there only 52 weeks in the year?

There are a number of days either at the beginning or at the end of the year that are not part of the "normal" 52 weeks of the year. PHP and/or MYSQL treats weeks as being not just any 7-day period, but specific periods from Mondays to Sundays. This can leave some "stray" days if a year starts or ends in the middle of a week. For example, in 2005, the year started on a Saturday. PHP/MYSQL does not treat the two days of Saturday and Sunday as the first week of the year, rather "Week 53".

Important Note: Due to a limitation with the Worldpay system, when you change your credit card details, your new card number will not be displayed until a payment has been debited from that card.
Please note that as Worldpay is a third party payment processor for StatCounter, we are unable to assist you with queries in relation to your Worldpay account. If you have difficulties with your Worldpay account, please refer to the Worldpay Shopper Help Area.

Please further note that if you are experiencing difficulties with Worldpay, we strongly recommend that you switch to our new payment processor, Realex, over which we have full control and with which we can offer you full assistance and support.

What is log? What do you mean by logsize?

Free accounts have 500 log size, so at any point of time stats details will be shown from last 500 pageloads/pageviews.

Say 250 users have viewed your webpages 2 times then our stats will show details of those 250 users, however if 10 users have viewed your webpages 50 times by re-loading or visiting that webpage again then stats will be shown of those 10 users only because StatCounter shows stats details only from last 500 pageloads.

Summary Stats are cumulative and are for the life of the project while detailed stats like visitor path, came from, entry/exit etc.. are solely dependent on logsize.

We hope you got the idea of how StatCounter show details in reference to its log size.

Why is my log still at 100 if the "free" log-size is 500?

Please make sure that you are not blocking email from support@statcounter.com!

In May of 2007 a mailshot was sent out to every StatCounter member - - all 1.5 million of them, announcing that the new "free" log was being raised from 100 to 500 pageloads. Members were advised that to take advantage of the new log-size, they should login to their StatCounter account, click "Adjust Logs" on the projects page and increase existing projects by 400 pageloads.

All NEW projects will automatically start with 500 pageloads, just the way your older projects started with 100, but the adjustment must be made.

To get your projects log size set to 500 please try the following steps.

1. Login to StatCounter
2. Click the "Adjust Log" link at the top / middle of the page
3. Change the log size to 500
4. Click the "Adjust Log" button at the bottom

How do I delete a project?

Click the red, "trash-can" icon to the right of the project to be deleted.

Caution: Deleted projects are not recoverable! If you have StatCounter code generated from this project on your website, deleting the project will result in an "Invalid Project" error message on your pages!

Why is my username/IP address/email banned from the StatCounter forum?

    Firstly, let us apologise.

We are very sorry for any confusion or upset caused by your finding yourself banned in our forum, however, please let us explain.

The forum is provided by StatCounter as a venue where members and potential members can offer help and assistance to each other, discuss ideas, get to know one another and interact in a positive way.

Unfortunately, large numbers of people have been joining the StatCounter forum simply and solely to post spam messages and links and promote certain sites (e.g. p0rn, drugs, counterfeit goods etc). These people are not StatCounter members and are not interested in contributing positively to the forum in any way.

In order to combat this kind of activity and maintain the integrity of the StatCounter forum we have found it necessary to implement a number of measures such as IP and email address banning.

    IP address banning:
Specific IP addresses or IP address ranges are banned when it is established that the specific IP address or range is being used for spamming purposes. Typically a range is blocked when more than 5 spammers from that address or range sign up to the forum within 1 hour.

If you find that your IP is banned you should reset your internet connection and try to log into the forum again. If the problem persists you should contact the StatCounter Support Team.

Note also that if you are using an open proxy server (e.g. for anonymous browsing) then there is a high degree of probability that you will not be able to use this IP address to sign up with the forum. This is because these kind of proxy servers are very popular with spammers and are therefore banned from our forum to safeguard it from floods of undesirable posts. In this case, the ban on your IP address cannot be lifted as to do so would allow many spammers access to our forum.

    Email address banning:
Certain email addresses which are commonly and frequently used by spammers are also banned in our forum.

If your email is banned, you should consider registering at the forum using an alternative email address.

    Username banning:
Certain usernames are banned in our forum e.g. anything associated with drugs or p0rn.

In this case, you should simply sign up with an alternative username.

While we do regret any inconvenience caused to our members, our actions are taken for the good of all Statcounter users.

Do I have to display a banner ad on my website? Why is this service free? I don't like free services - what are you getting out of it?

You absolutely do not have to put a banner ad on your site. We keep our
overheads to a minimum - then make our money from advertising when you log onto StatCounter to see the latest visitors to your website. We do not put advertisements on your website!

If your website is getting more than 250,000 pageloads a month, then you are outside this free model. Get in touch with us before adding the code to your website and we'll be able to offer you better stats for an excellent price. You'll get real value for money.

The primary goal behind StatCounter is to help webmasters succeed online, and we want to provide the best possible website stats to the most amount of webmasters and site owners out there. What's the point in designing a system that doesn't get used by anybody? We want as many webmasters as possible out there to be using our system. But we will only provide the service on a sustainable basis which is why websites getting over 250,000 pageloads a month either have to pay or remove the code.

My visitors aren't being counted - why?

Generally this means that either a) you have not installed the counter code onto your website or b) your website has not had any visitors.

How do I install StatCounter using MSN Spaces ?

Set up a StatCounter account and use the installation wizard to create your StatCounter code. Now follow these directions:

Note: Javascript is not allowed with MSN Spaces so it is not possible to record information such as the page title or referring link information. We would strongly suggest you switch to another web editor that will give you greater control.

Note: MSN Spaces is quite limited in what it allows you to add. Unfortunately you can't customise the layout to include a StatCounter as standard. Thus, the only way to include a counter would be to include the code for it in the blog posts themselves. But if you were to do this, and include it in blog posts, you'd need to ensure that only one blog post on each page has the StatCounter code - if multiple blogs on a page had the code, it would count each visitor multiple times.

As you can see, it's not an ideal solution, but unfortunately it appears to be the only way to use a service like StatCounter with MSN Spaces. We'd highly recommend considering a service like www.blogger.com, which allows for more freedom in customising.

    1. copy the StatCounter code (highlight + ctrl c)
    2. visit the page you want to install the counter on e.g. http://spaces.msn.com/members/your_space/

    3. Click the "Edit" button for the page you want to add the StatCounter code to
    4. On the right hand side under the Widgets menu left click (and dont release) on the icon for "HTML" (looks like a blue ball)
    5. Drag the blue ball to as far down on your page as you can with the green dotted outline box remaining around it then let go of the left mouse button
    6. A new window will popup, delete the default code already inside of it and paste your StatCounter code
    7. Click the "Ok" button

    9. Click the "Publish" button

The StatCounter code should now be active on your page.

Why am I getting so many zero second visits? How can someone visit for zero seconds?

Visit length is determined by the movement of visitor from one page to another so if visitor visits just single page then visit length displayed is 0 seconds. Also if visitor visit couples of webpages and moves to a different site then we cannot record how much time he spent on last page and hence time displayed is in several hours.

Help! Strange pages are showing up in my stats!

This is possible if someone have copied your webpage contents along with statcounter code to their webpages and as a result their webpage stats are included in your statcounter account.

This can be stopped by changing your security code and then re-generating and re-installing code on your webpages. Here are the steps for changing your security code:-

    1. Log in your statcounter account.
    2. Click on small wrench icon next to project name
    3. Click on Security Code link.
    4. For 'Generate New Security Code?' select Yes from list and for 'Enable or disable security checking?' select Enabled from list.
    5. Hit Submit button at bottom.

    What is the security code?

The security code puts you in control of your project. If someone robs your webpage with your StatCounter code included, you will have their hits recorded as well. To stop those hits from being recorded, you simply need to generate a new StatCounter Security Code for your project, and then install the code on your website.

    To enable Security code:-

    1. Log in your statcounter account.
    2. Click on small wrench icon next to project name
    3. Click on Security Code link.
    4. For 'Enable or disable security checking?' select Enabled from list.
    5. Hit Submit button at bottom.

How do I install StatCounter on my Flickr?

Flickr doesn't allow use of the full featured StatCounter code because it includes Javascript code. Please try the directions below to get code which should work with Flickr.

    1. Login to StatCounter
    2. Click the project name you want the code for
    3. Click the mini-wrench icon towards the upper left hand corner
    4. Click the "Install Code" link
    5. Ensure the "HTML Only" check box is selected on the second page

Once you have your HTML only code, paste it on your profile.

Can I transfer a project from one StatCounter account to another?

    Yes!

But you MUST have admin access for both accounts to do so.

On the My Projects page (of the StatCounter account TO which you want to transfer a project) click the "transfer project" link at the top of the page.

Next, enter the username and password of the account FROM which you are transferring a project. Submit the form.

Now choose the project you want to transfer from the drop down list and submit the form a final time.

    That's it!

    What are Exit Links?

Exit Links are the links that people click to leave your site.

    Let's look at an example.

You own www.mysite.com. You link to your sister's site (www.sister-site.com) on your site.

The link "www.sister-site.com" is considered to be an Exit Link on your site. This is because when a visitor clicks this link, they exit your site "www.mysite.com" and visit another third party site.

You can use the Exit Links Stat in StatCounter to see how much traffic you are sending to your affiliate sites and to your advertisers.

If you do NOT have any external links on your site, then your Exit Links Stat will be blank!

NOTE (1): Exit Links are links to an EXTERNAL domain i.e. when people click a link to visit another INTERNAL page on your site, this is NOT considered to be an Exit Link.

NOTE (2): Exit Links are currently only available with new StatCounter projects, or projects which have been converted over the the new SC4 system. All SC3 projects will be converted to the new SC4 system asap.

Where can I get an invoice for my payment?

Invoices are available within the BILLING section of your StatCounter account.

Log into your StatCounter account and click the "Billing" link in the top navigation bar to access this section.

    Credit Card Payments - Realex
An invoice is emailed to the billing contact on the StatCounter account as soon as the transaction is authorized. If there is any problem charging your card, this will be notified by email.

NOTE: Realex has been our credit card processor since May 2008. If you have upgraded or changed upgrade by credit card since that date, then you will be using Realex.

    Credit Card Payments - Worldpay
An invoice will be available in your StatCounter account 1-6 days after your payment is made. The invoices are not available immediately as we have to wait to receive the payments file before invoices can be issued.

NOTE: Worldpay is our former credit card processor - we use Realex now for all NEW credit card payments. If you upgraded BEFORE May 2008 by credit card, then your payments will continue to be processed by Worldpay until you cancel or change subscription.

    Credit Card Payments - 2Checkout
An invoice will be available in your StatCounter account 2-6 weeks after your payment is made. The invoices are not available immediately as we have to wait to receive the payments file before invoices can be issued.

NOTE: 2Checkout is a former credit card processor for StatCounter and was used for upgrades before 1 March 2005 only. We use Realex now for all NEW credit card payments. If you upgraded BEFORE March 2005 by credit card, then your payments will continue to be processed by 2Checkout until you cancel or change subscription.

    Paypal Payments
An invoice will be available in your StatCounter account 4-10 days after your payment is made. The invoices are not available immediately as we have to wait to receive the payments file before invoices can be issued.

    Check/Cheque Payments
When you upgrade by Check/Cheque payment, a pro-forma (or temporary) invoice is created in your StatCounter account.

When your payment is received AND processed, the invoice in your account will be marked as final and paid in full.

Due to the time involved in posting, processing and obtaining bank clearance for this type of payment, it can be several weeks before a "final" invoice is available in your account.

    Wire Transfer Payments
When you upgrade by Wire Transfer, a pro-forma (or temporary) invoice is created in your StatCounter account.

When your payment is received AND cleared by our bank, the invoice in your account will be marked as final and paid in full.

It is very IMPORTANT to note that it can take 10-14 days for international payments to clear our bank account. Many are cleared in just 3-5 days, but occasionally delays can be experienced.

Can I partially reset my logs?

You CAN reset your logs back to ANY number you wish by going to My Projects > Install Code and Customise Project Settings - however we do NOT recommend this.

Partially resetting your log will NOT necessarily delete the oldest entries in your log file. You MAY remove the most recent entries in your log file instead AND once your stats are reset, they can NOT be restored.

Also, there is no reason to reset your logs - older hits in your log are simply overwritten by new hits. Your StatCounter does NOT stop tracking when your log is full!

    ######################

For anyone interested in further information about the procedure of resetting your log file, please read on...

Think of your log as like a column in a spreadsheet with 500 cells labelled 1 - 500.

When you first set up your StatCounter account, cell 1 is filled with your first visit, cell 2 with your second etc...over time all the cells are filled up.

When your log is full, the oldest entry is overwritten by new visits to your site. And the log entries are overwritten again and again over time...

This means that your most recent visits may be included in any of the 5000 cells i.e. cells 1 - 10 might contain Dec 18 visitors. Cells 50 - 60 might contain Jan 1 visitors. Cells 490 - 500 might contain Dec 10 visitors. In other words, cells 1 - 30 won't necessarily contain your most recent visits.

When you set your log back to 30 for example, this means that the entries in cells 1 - 30 are retained, but as described above, the visit dates may be at any time.

How do I add StatCounter to my Live Space page?

Here’s what you do to add StatCounter to Live Spaces:

In the top left of your Live Spaces page click “More” beside where is says “Someone’s Space”.

    Click “Add Other Modules”.

Scroll down and under “Other” choose “Custom HTML” and click “Save” to add the module to your site.

Now you edit your “Custom HTML” module and paste in your StatCounter code in the body of the module.

(Note Live Spaces only allows the HTML only StatCounter code - no javascript!)

Unique Visitors are DIFFERENT in the Summary Stats compared to the Detailed Log Stats - what's wrong?

    Unique Visitors
First, it's important to be clear on the definition of Unique Visitor. A Unique Visitor is a "distinct" or "separate" visitor.

In your summary stats for today, for example, you may have 25 Pageloads and 4 Unique Visitors. This means that 4 different/distinct/separate visitors looked at a combined total of 25 pages on your site.

Summary Stats - How Uniques are Calculated
In the Summary Stats, Unique Visitors are calculated by the use of a "cookie". A "cookie" is a small text file that we use at StatCounter to determine whether a visitor has been to your site in the recent past.

When a visitor first looks at a page on your site, a StatCounter cookie is placed in their browser (if allowed). Then, as the visitor browses your site, the cookie tells us that this is NOT a new/distinct/separate visitor visiting your site each time. Instead, it's the same visitor looking at several different pages.

You should note that it IS possible for a visitor to disable all cookies in their browser.

When a visitor has cookies disabled, we have no way of knowing if they are a unique visitor or not. If a visitor has cookies disabled, then each page of your site that he views will be considered to be a pageload by a Unique Visitor. Obviously, this is not strictly correct, but since most visitors will have cookies enabled, this does give you a fairly accurate overview of your Unique Visitors.

Stats from Detailed Log - How Uniques are Calculated
In the Detailed Log, Unique Visitors are calculated based on IP address. An IP address is a unique number assigned to a computer connected to the internet. IP addresses are generally assigned by your ISP or internet service provider. IP addresses can be static i.e. they never change - every time you connect to the internet you connect using the same IP address. OR IP addresses can be dynamic - this means that your IP address changes every time you reconnect to the internet, or in some cases while you are connected to the internet.

When a visitor first looks at a page on your site, StatCounter records the visitor's IP address. Then, as the visitor browses your site, the IP address tells us that this is not a new/distinct/separate visitor visiting your site each time. Instead, it's the same visitor looking at several different pages.

You should note, however, that in some cases a user's IP address changes each time they visit a different page of your site. (e.g. AOL users or anyone using a Dynamic Web Proxy.)

When a visitor's IP address changes constantly, we can't correctly track them as a unique visitor. Since each pageload on your site can be linked to a different IP address, each page of your site will be considered to be a pageload by a Unique Visitor. Obviously, this is not strictly correct, but since most visitors do not have a constantly changing IP address, the stat is a very good approximation of reality.

Difference in Calculation of Unique Visitors
There are positives and negatives to both of the above methods of calculating Unique Visitors. We provide you with the two different option so that you get the best possible overview of your true Unique Visitor numbers.

Summary Stats show more Unique Visitors - why?!
If a visitor has a static (unchanging) IP address BUT has cookies disabled in their browser, then the Unique Visitor count per the Summary Stats will be inflated.

As cookies are disabled, the Summary Stats will consider each pageload to be a pageload by a Unique Visitor BUT the detailed log stats will correctly capture the Unique Visitor on the basis of their IP address.

Detailed Log Stats show more Unique Visitors - why?!
If a visitor has cookies enabled, but has a constantly changing IP address, then the Unique Visitor count per the Detailed Log Stats will be inflated.

As the IP address changes with every pageload, the Detailed Log Stats consider each pageload to be a pageload by a Unique Visitor BUT the Summary Stats will correctly capture the Unique Visitor on the basis of the cookie in their browser.

    How does the billing work?

Upgraded StatCounter accounts are billed on a subscription basis.

In other words, charges are recurring until your subscription is canceled.

Note that billing is recurring because the costs of maintaining an upgraded account are recurring!

You can choose monthly, quarterly or annual billing.

Let's look at an example of a 10,000 log upgrade for $19 per month. When you sign up for this upgrade, you sign up to pay $19 PER MONTH for a 10,000 log.

Note that the upgrade is NOT $19 PER 10,000 HITS. It's $19 PER MONTH.

    How does an upgrade work?

When you upgrade with StatCounter, additional log space is made available to your account.

This additional log space allows you to retain online access to a longer period of stats.

Note that YOU must assign the additional log to the projects in your account. This is NOT done automatically so that YOU can decide how best to allocate the additional log among your projects.

To allocate your additional log to your projects, log into StatCounter, go to the My Projects page and click the "Adjust Log" link at the top of the page.

I paid for X hits but I haven't used them yet - why are you billing me again?

StatCounter upgrades are *time* based not *hits* based.

Payments are due each period whether or not the full log quota is used in the period. This is because the costs of maintaining an upgraded account occur on a time basis and are not related to the number of hits to your site.

Let's look at an example of a 10,000 upgrade for $19 per month. When you sign up for this upgrade, you sign up to pay $19 PER MONTH for a 10,000 log.

Note that the upgrade is NOT $19 PER 10,000 HITS. It's $19 PER MONTH.

Since the cost of providing increased server processing and database space to your account are recurring, billing must be periodically recurring also.

If I upgrade, how soon will the additional log space be available to me?

The additional log should be available within your account within minutes of upgrading by credit card or Paypal.

In the case of cheque/check or wire payments the additional log will be added to your account when the cheque/check is received or when the wire payment reaches our bank account.

If you are concerned that your account has NOT been appropriately upgraded, then please contact the StatCounter Support Team for assistance.

What are the payment options for an upgraded account?

When you upgrade with StatCounter you can pay by:

    • Credit Card (Visa/Mastercard/Maestro-Laser/Amex)

    • Paypal (Discover cards are accepted by Paypal)

    • EUR/USD Cheque/Check *

    • Wire/Bank Transfer *

*Due to the extra processing costs involved, only annual upgrades are available via this payment method.

Note that, unfortunately, we are not currently able to accept Maestro-Switch cards.

    Can I pay using AMEX?

Yes - but currently ONLY for payments in EUR.

If you wish to pay directly via an AMEX card, you must pay in EUR.

If you choose to pay in USD, payment by AMEX is not available to you directly. (i.e. AMEX will NOT appear in the dropdown menu)

If you wish to pay in USD via an AMEX card, you can do this by selecting the Paypal payment option.

If I upgrade, who is charging my credit card?

Your card is charged by StatCounter, a company registered in the Republic of Ireland.

Full contact details are available here.

What is the tax status of StatCounter?

StatCounter is tax resident in the Republic of Ireland.

If you are a US resident and require evidence of our tax status we can supply you with a completed IRS W-8BEN form on request - please log into your StatCounter account and click the "Support" link in the top navigation bar to submit a ticket to the StatCounter Support Team.

Note that a W-9 form is for US residents only.

Do I have to upgrade when my free log quota is full?

    No!

Every project you set up is assigned a free log quota of 500. When the free log quota is full, your StatCounter does NOT stop tracking! The oldest entries in your log are simply overwritten by new entries.

This means that you always retain an online history of the last 500 pageloads on your site.

Note that you do NOT need to reset your stats when your log is full.

StatCounter is happy to track your site for free for as long as you want... with one exception - if your site gets in excess of 250,000 pageloads per month this falls outside of our free plan. Unfortunately, it is not economically feasible for us to provide a free service to a site with this level of traffic. In this case we ask that you upgrade your StatCounter account or remove the StatCounter code from your site.

Can I pay using my Maestro card?

There are two types of Maestro card.

      Maestro-Laser
This card type is accepted by our merchant bank and can therefore be used to make payments to StatCounter.

      Maestro-Switch
Unfortunately, this card type is NOT accepted by our merchant bank and can NOT therefore be used to make payments to StatCounter.

Why has the VAT on my recurring payment changed?

From 1 December 2008, the Irish Government has increased the standard rate of VAT from 21% to 21.5%.

This increase in VAT rate will effect all StatCounter customers liable for VAT who are billed on or after 1 December 2008.

Why has my Worldpay subscription amount changed?

Apologies for any confusion - unfortunately it is not possible for us to amend the auto-email that is sent by Worldpay when a subscription amount changes.

If you have recently received a changed subscription amount email from Worldpay, this is because the
Irish Government has changed the standard VAT rate from 21% to 21.5% for all invoices issued on or after 1 December 2008.

If you have a $9 net subscription for a 1,500 upgrade, for example, and you are subject to VAT, your payment amount will change from $10.89 ($9 plus 21% VAT) to $10.94 ($9 plus 21.5% VAT).

Broadly, only the following are subject to Irish VAT:

    * Non-VAT registered EU individuals/businesses i.e. those without a valid VAT number
    * All Irish resident individuals/businesses

Note that this information is current as at November 2008.

This will add StatCounter to all pages of your website.

Alternatively you can add StatCounter on a page by page basis, by following steps (1) to (5) above and then using the "drag and drop" html code block. This is in the top navigation bar in the "Insert Item" menu. Drag and drop the block to the desired location on your page, then paste the StatCounter code into the block and save.

Using this method, you must manually add the StatCounter code to every page of your site individually.

Note again that you must publish your website before the changes will take effect.
